Recruitment / Placement Fee Scam

Updated June 1, 2026Also called: placement fee scam, job placement scam, recruiter fee scam

A scheme charging job seekers a fee to secure a placement, visa, or “guaranteed” position that never materializes.

Fraudulent “agencies” demand a placement, processing, or visa fee in exchange for a guaranteed job — often targeting people seeking overseas or high-demand roles. Once paid, the job evaporates or was never real.

In legitimate hiring, the employer pays recruiters; a genuine agency does not charge the candidate to be placed.

Red flags

  • A fee to be placed, processed, or guaranteed a role
  • Promises of guaranteed overseas jobs or visas
  • Pressure to pay quickly to “hold” the position

Frequently asked questions

Should a recruiter or agency charge me to find a job?

No. Reputable recruiters are paid by the employer, not the candidate. Being asked for a placement or processing fee to secure a job is a hallmark of a scam.
